School Rules Our school rules use as a base - 3 key expectations: Best Behaviour, Best Manners and Best Effort. Actions which are contrary to normally acceptable social behaviour and good taste are contrary to the rules of the school. Parents are asked to co-operate with teachers in making children aware of their responsibilities and the fact that misbehaviour may reflect not only on themselves but also on their school and their family. Teacher Interviews If at any time you wish to discuss your child's progress, please do not hesitate to seek an interview with the class teacher. In this instance, please contact the teacher in advance and arrange a time rather than just "drop in". An appointment ensures that the teacher can see you and talk with you. Endeavour to arrange a date and time through your child. If this is not possible, a telephone message may be left at the office. Complaints Management If you believe a problem or difficulty exists with your child's association with the school, please let us know. If you believe the problem or difficulty is of a relatively minor nature, it is best to refer to your child's teacher, however, if you have a more serious problem it should be referred to the Deputy Principal responsible for your child's class. If, following these contacts, a problem persists, an appointment may be made to discuss the matter with the Principal. Interviews with the Principal or Deputy Principals Parents wishing to arrange an interview with the Principal, or Deputy Principals should contact the office staff who will make the necessary arrangements. Newsletters/Notices The school aims to provide improved communications between the school and parents. Our main method of communication with parents is through newsletters and notices. It is preferred that the newsletter is emailed, though at present it is also sent home with the oldest member of a family at this school. (The main School Newsletter is sent home every Friday.) Parents are asked to make every effort to read these as they generally contain important information about the activities of the school. Teacher/Parent MeetingsIn an endeavour to assist parents in their understanding of the work to be covered and for class teachers to outline their expectations of their pupils, parent meetings will be arranged early in first term. An invitation, stating time and place, will be sent to all parents and your attendance will be beneficial to both you and your child. Other sessions on specific topics may be held in the course of the year after being advertised in advance. Medical/Dental Appointments in School Hours If possible, parents should endeavour to make any appointments for their children outside of school hours. Should this not be possible, the parent should send a note to the class teacher advising the time of appointment or that an appointment is being sought and then collect the child from the classroom at the appropriate time. Children should be signed out at the school office. Visiting or Removing Students During School Hours Parents/Guardians who wish to speak to children during school hours or lunch breaks are asked to report to the office first. This saves you time and the school possible concern seeing an unfamiliar person wandering around the premises. If children are to be removed from school during school hours for any reason at all, they must first be signed out at the school office. This means that under no circumstances are children permitted to wait at gates or outside school grounds for personal safety reasons. Phone Messages for StudentsPhone messages for children will only be accepted for delivery to children at school in extreme emergencies. Wherever possible, please ensure that all arrangements regarding your child's transport after school are made and communicated to your child before coming to school in the morning. In the case of young children, it is best to write changes of transport in a note to the teacher so they can ensure these are remembered and followed. Sickness In the event of your being phoned during the school day to collect a sick or injured child, please sign them out at the office prior to taking them home. Medications School staff must not administer over the counter medication, including paracetamol, analgesics, homeopathic or prescribed medications unless they are accompanied by written advice from a medical practitioner and with the medication in the original labelled container with the doctor’s prescription label attached. The parent/caregiver must complete a medical form supplied at the Administration Office. Attendances We would impress upon parents the importance of regular attendance at school. The syllabus is a very full one and children who miss new work when it is being taught (and this is not always avoidable) may have great difficulty in "picking up" later. AbsencesFollowing pupil absence, a written note outlining the reason for the absence should be sent to the class teacher with the child on their return to school. If a student is absent for three days and if the absence is likely to be longer, it would be appreciated if a note was sent to the teacher or the school is contacted by phone on the student absent line. Transfer of StudentsWhen a student is transferring to another school, an official transfer form should be requested from the school office by the child's parent or guardian. Schools are advised not to enrol children who are not in possession of a Transfer Certificate. Changes in Contact Details If you change your address or if there is a change in your emergency contact number, it is essential for the well-being of your child that this information is given to us so that we are able to contact you or some close relative if an emergency arises. Please ensure that the main office as well as the class teacher is given this information. On a regular basis (once a term), written updates will be sought of these details. Emergency ContactsPlease notify the School Office as soon as possible if their are any changes to your child's emergency contact details. School RoutineSchool commences at 8:50am and ceases at 3:00pm. Students are required to be at school by 8:45am. They should not arrive at an early hour due to the fact that schools do not commence official playground supervision until 8:45am. Leaving School GroundsPermission notes from families must be held at the school before a child is permitted to leave the grounds. Due to the small size of the school grounds, students are sometimes taken by Teachers to 'Clive Berghofer Stadium' (Athletic Oval) where ample space is available. This could be for class activities or sports training. School DismissalParents who arrive in vehicles to pick up students are asked to observe the road safety rules with regard to parking of vehicles. Parents are also reminded that students who cross Arthur, Mary and Lindsay Streets to board private vehicles must, in the interests of safety, cross in the patrolled areas. Road safety Crossing Supervisors are on duty each morning between 8:00am and 9:00am and each afternoon between 3:00pm and 3:30pm. Your co-operation in this matter will help to ensure that there are no accidents during this very busy period. School is dismissed at 3:00pm. Once dismissed, students are to proceed home. All children are to have left the school grounds by 3:15pm unless under the direct supervision of a member of staff. Students who travel by bus wait at the bus assembly area for checking onto buses. Parents who collect students each afternoon in private vehicles are asked to ensure that students are picked up at dismissal time and not left to wait at the school for long periods. No responsibility can be accepted by the school under such circumstances. If children miss their regular transport or companions home, they will be instructed to wait at the school office. Parents are asked to phone the school immediately they become aware of such a situation. Outside School Hours CareToowoomba East State School After School Care Service operates Monday to Friday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm during term time. Permanent bookings or casual care can be arranged by phoning the co-ordinator. Casual bookings must be arranged with the co-ordinator by 10:00am on the day care is required. Charges apply. The Outside School Hours Care sub-committee meets regularly. All interested parents are welcome to attend. Bicycle SafetyIn the interests of pupil and bicycle safety, the school strongly suggests that all bicycles be secured with a suitable lock to the racks provided. The wearing of bicycle helmets is compulsory by law. HomeworkThe interest you show in the school work your child brings home will be a great help to him/her in ensuring success at school. Within the school most teachers assign tasks for homework. These could be a list of spelling or number facts, consolidation of some work learnt at school or work on assignments or projects. If parents believe their child is spending an excessive amount of time on homework, they should discuss the matter with the child's teacher.
